Abstract

The high workload in the grape harvest (250–300 hours) and the connected limited impact resulted in the first attempts with grape harvesters in the late seventies. Since then, in spite of initial quality problems, the mechanization of grape harvesting has become more and more prevalent in the wine-growing regions of the world. The economic advantages, the continuous development of the machines and finally also the international standardization of the test methods for the comparative assessment of the reading methods led to a worldwide establishment of mechanized grape harvesting. In the following, the prerequisites for this technology, the pros and cons, towed and self-propelled machines as well as some technical innovations are presented.
