Abstract

Although they were written over a long period of time of more than 20 years
the short prose gathered in the collection Deca have a few common underlying
themes: aside from being connected by the themes of childhood and adolescence,
their common topic, in some prose more and in some less transparently varied,
is the motif of fear. Although fear is an emotion which is present in human life
almost from birth, special dimension and frequency are noted in adolescence in
psychological literature. Ivo Andrić proves one more time that he is a mindful
scholar of human behavior and growth. Although the author’s intentions are far
from dealing with the scientific problems of this sensitive period of human existence,
Andrić, with the meticulousness of a scientist, through the prism of everyday
little things observes his characters, their reactions, and he once more manages to,
as he once said, surprise us with the familiar. In this work we will deal with the
function of the motif of fear in short prose in the collection Deca.
