Abstract

The years from 1890 to 1990 represent an important phase in the development of the Dubrovnik region. Its economy underwent a significant change in structure, evolving gradually over the years under the powerful influence of political circumstances and migrations. The interest for some traditional forms of manufacture faded (craftsmanship and agriculture), whereas seafaring and tourism attracted more attention. With occasional oscillations, trade managed to occupy a leading position unlike other economic activities whose place and rank varied. The transformation in economy has been accompanied by demographic changes and their interaction dictated further progress. Throughout those hundred years the economic and demographic picture of Dubrovnik evolved significantly.
