Abstract

The novel The Tale of a Police Prefect (1971) by the Czech writer Ladislav Fuks takes over all the constitutive components of the crime genre, although literary scholars and critics agree that Fuks did not write a crime novel in the strict sense of the word. Moreover, in The Tale of a Police Prefect we witness its erosion, the main cause of which could be attributed to the process of blurring of meaning. The focus of this essay is on the ways in which this is realised. Narratological analysis of selected examples from the novel seeks to show that blurring is achieved by targeted changes in different types of focalisation and frequent paralipses, which grow into narrative strategies due to their frequency.
