Typographical arrangements in architectural designs in the period of architectural modernism
Ivan Juras
Abstract
The selection and use of typographical arrangements was not an isolated occurrence. Artists-sculptors were directly interested in surface proportions, the use of colour (coloured diagrams) and typography on the architectural volume because they assumed the materialization of their theoretical hypotheses. They did not only study new ways of graphical expression, but proclaimed new visions of architecture and urban planning in manifesto form. Thus their demand that the individual letter or group of letters on a certain surface must include an art component meant their rejection of the mere functionality of the written message. As always, architects only followed the suit.
