Abstract
In recent years Walnut husk fly (Rhagoletis completa Cresson, Diptera: Tephritidae) has been an increasingly important pest of walnuts (Juglans ssp.) in the Republic of Croatia. In order to determine the optimal time for beginning chemical treatment in walnut plantations, it was necessary to collect data for pest flight dynamics in the climatic conditions of eastern Croatia. The flight of adult pest was monitored at eight localities in Osijek-Baranja County (Popovac, Bizovac, Brodjanci and five localities in Strizivojna) during 2021. For that purpose, yellow and white sticky traps with the addition of a synthetic food attractant based on ammonium carbonate were used. Sticky traps were placed in commercial walnut plantations in the northern and central part of the county as well as on 10 solitary trees (five localities) in backyards in the southern part of the county. The duration of the flight differs significantly between the localities and varies from at least 42 days at the Bizovac locality to 70 days at the Strizivojna II and Strizivojna III localities. The first catch of adult walnut flies was recorded on 18.07. at the locality Popovac while the last catch was recorded on 01.10.2021. year at the site Brodjanci, based on which it can be concluded that the flight period. The flight of the walnut fly lasted 75 days and three peaks of flight were recorded: 13.08., 03.09. and 17.09. The value of adult captures differs significantly between localities and varies from a maximum of 1661 individuals at the locality of Strizivojna IV and at least 67 individuals at the locality of Bizovac. Since the confirmation of the first finding of the pest in 2004 in the western part of the Republic of Croatia (Istria County), the walnut husk fly population has spread rapidly to the eastern parts and due to favorable agroecological conditions has the potential for exponential propagation.
