Abstract

The primary goal of teaching technical subjects within engineering studies is to explain the problem to students. In order for students to be able to achieve a state of comprehension, i.e. deep understanding, thorough interpretation by the lecturer is usually required. Buckling is one of those technical phenomena that is well covered in the literature, but is nonetheless generally poorly understood. Why is that so? The main reason is probably the fact that the approach to the presentation of this topic is quite uniform, in a way that it exactly presents the components of this phenomenon, but not enough attention is paid to their connection. The matter is further aggravated by the popularity of linear algebra, i.e. matrix notation in recent times, accompanied by a lack of diagrams and images, thus shifting the focus away from the phenomenon itself. In this paper, on the one hand, we try to explain the logic of the dimensioning and analysis of struts subject to buckling, and on the other hand we try to raise awareness of the causality that exists between the relevant quantities that appear in this issue.
