Linguistic Landscape in Tourist Offer of Šibenik

Abstract

The tourist offer of a city or an area is influenced by a number of factors related to geographical, financial, historical, cultural and many other reasons. Apart from them, the linguistic factor is also important for a quality tourist offer, especially when it comes to foreign guests. The linguistic landscape as a concept of linguistics and sociolinguistics has been witnessing an increased number of research and interests of linguists in the last two decades. The aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the linguistic landscape on the example of the city of Šibenik, with an emphasis on the elements of multilingualism related to the tourist offer. In addition to an overview of the situation, the paper also provides a classification of the elements of the linguistic landscape as well as a qualitative analysis of signs. The results of the research showed a significant presence of multilingualism in the linguistic landscape of Šibenik, where English has a dominant role. Thus, we can conclude that the tourist offer of Šibenik is largely oriented towards the foreign market and the language landscape is influenced by a significant number of tourists who visit this area, but also the status the English language has on the global level.
