Abstract

The narrative situation of retrospective first-person narration in Marcel Proust's novel cycle In Search of Lost Time enables suggestive conveying of the inner content of consciousness and complex psychic experiences of the main character, who is simultaneously narrator and hero. Raúl Ruiz's film adaptation Time Regained (1999) abandons the principle of fidelity to the original text, but succeeds in presenting the essence of the adapted literary work – primarily the deep subjectivity of Proust's novel, by analogous means. This essay examines narrative features in Ruiz’s movie, that is, the narrative functions which are in the movie performed by the character of Marcel, both in terms of narrative expression (as narrator) and in terms of content (as the main character through whom everything is focalized). The choice of the main character as the focus of narration enables transferring the essence of his consciousness – and thus the essence of Proust's novel – to the screen by means of film language. Those means are, by the experience they provoke in the recipient, equivalent to those used in the novel.
