Abstract

Selenium is an essential element for animals and humans and its dietary intake is not sufficient in many countries. Therefore some amounts of selenium from different sources are supplied in animal diet. Usually sodium selenite and organic selenium, SelplexTM are used. The investigation was conducted on 30 lambs from the age of 60 days during 50 growing days, divided into two groups. Lambs were fed meadow hay (ad libitum) and a feed mixture. A preparation of sodium selenite was added to the feed mixture in the control group of lambs in the concentration of 0.03% and organic selenium (Sel-PlexTM, Alltech, Inc.) was added to the feed mixture in the experimental group in the same concentration. The selenium concentration in the lambs' blood was determined by graphite method. Body mass in the control and experimental group of lambs was similar on 25th day of growing (27.83 kg: 27.96 kg), and 50th day of growing (36.20 kg:36.03 kg), as well as the average daily intake (344 g : 347 g). Significantly higher (P<0.05) selenium concentration was determined in lambs' sera on the 25th and 50th day of growing in the experimental group in relation to the controls (90.75 and 100.09 µg/L and 49.45 and 79.10 µg/L). Higher activity of the glutathione peroxidase was found in the experimental group in relation to the control group in both measurings. According to the selenium concentration in the blood we can conclude that organic selenium was metabolised better than inorganic, which did not influence the production performances in growing lambs during 50 days.
