Abstract

In this paper, after a brief survey of the discovery of the Pythagorean theorem in ancient civilisations, we present eight historical proofs of this theorem in detail: the proofs of Euclid and Ptolemy, three
proofs by Thabit ibn Qurra, the proof attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, U.S. president James A. Garfield’s proof, and Albert Einstein’s boyhood proof.
