On the Nature, Meaning and Aims of Teaching Philosophy

Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to critically analyse the nature, meaning and aims of teaching philosophy in the context of the modern school curriculum. The structure of the paper is based on the explanation of three main theses: 1. The dominance of instrumental rationality, guided by the logic of capital, leads to a reductionist approach to education that damages the humanistic subject area and the communicative nature of philosophy teaching; 2. The teaching of philosophy nurtures special and much-needed dispositions and forms of knowledge that are manifested in a holistic perspective and the development of reflective consciousness through the cultivation of the mind, nurturing humanity and creative narrative imagination; 3. The meaning and aims of teaching philosophy in the school curriculum lead to the development of sceptical, reflective and critical thinking, which does not stop at the explanation of reality, but enables symbolic unity and personal integrity, that is, the potential for self-knowledge and emancipation.
