Abstract

Arie antiche is a well-known music album divided in three volumes which contains one hundred seventeenth- and eighteenth-century songs collected, transcribed for piano and published by the composer Alessandro Parisotti in 1885. Internationally, there are single-volume redactions of this collection used as key manuals in the teaching of opera-singing. In Croatia a two volume-collection of only 22 songs has been published in 1954 by the publisher Muzička naklada and all the verses of the songs were translated by the famous novelist Vladan Desnica. The article offers a thorough analysis of the translational strategies and solutions applied in three songs taken as examples of Desnica’s mastery in this particular field of translation, which is the verse underwriting a musical score for the purpose of being sung.
