Abstract

There is a dearth of attention afforded to the topic of Roman
ports (portus) in the Croatian specialist literature. The collected
archaeological data concerning ports in the present geographic
bounds of Istria—from the Dragonja River in the north to the
Raša River to the south of the peninsula—have opened research
questions concerning the attribution of the various ports, on the
basis of which a hierarchy of these ports is proposed. This paper
aims—drawing on the data—to determine the importance of
individual port structures within the context of onshore economic
activity.

Keywords

Histria, Roman period, hierarchy of ports, principal ports, secondary ports, villa ports, ports of major production complexes
