Abstract
The possession of media competences has become necessary in modern societies
in which children already encounter media content in the first years of their lives,
while the exposure and time they spend with the media grows more and more as they
grow up. Media education should prepare children for coexistence with the media
and develop the skills of using, analyzing, critically evaluating and creating media
content, and in this process, along with the family, the most important role is played
by teachers who carry out media education in schools and as such they must be media literate themselves. The aim of this work is to determine the media competences of classroom and Croatian language teachers, as primary media educators in Croatian schools, and their connection with the evaluation of students’ media competences. 2,229 teachers participated in the research, which was conducted using the self-assessment method of respondents, and the results showed that teachers’ media competences are related to assessments of students’ media competences, and
that teachers rate their own skills in the production of media content, primarily the
more complex ones, the worst, and that they need additional training in the field of
media literacy. At the same time, teachers of the Croatian language rate their ability
to analyze and critically evaluate media content higher than classroom teachers.
The results show that the media competence of teachers is weakly related to the
assessment of students’ critical media literacy.
