Abstract

The shifts of a beam of electromagnetic waves reflected and transmitted by a thin layer are derived for the case of total reflection. The solution for the layer is based on 􀘰he solution of the wave equation for a semiinfinite me­dium and on geometrical optics. The results agree with results obtained by solving the wave equation for the layer directly and some insight into the process of electromagnetic barrier penetration is gained.
