Abstract

The Hartree-Fock equations for the lowest excited state of a N-body problem are derived, using the orthogonality of the trial function to the approximate ground state and the diagonalization of the Hamiltonian between these states as constraints. It is shown that the exact eigenvalue of the excited states is a lower bound to the approximate energy values. The·method is illustrated for the para-state of a two-electron problem in a Coulomb field.
