Abstract
The paper presents the results of a survey of the target group
conducted in 2019 in Ukrainian cities (Ivano-Frankivsk,
Bila Tserkva, Poltava, and Mykolaiv) in order to determine
the degree of awareness of language conflict existence
among the inhabitants of these cities and to determine, on
the example of the data collected in the city of Poltava, the
mechanisms of the spread of language ideology in mass language
awareness. The influence of these language ideologies
on the language situation in certain cities and the entire
country is investigated. The research methodology, which
includes questionnaires with excerpts from social network
posts on the topic of language conflict in Ukraine, is provided.
The advantages of the survey method as one of the
modern tools of sociolinguistic research are explained, especially
in investigating the conflict potential of the Ukrainian
language situation, as well as in monitoring the dynamics of
the language situation, changes in public awareness related
to language issues in different groups divided according
to age, education, and place of residence. The established
correlations confirm the high degree of inertia of language
attitudes in the mass consciousness of Ukrainians, which
may explain the weak dynamics of the Ukrainian language situation in the period before the war and the ineffectiveness
of the state language policy. The possibilities of deepening
sociolinguistic research in Ukraine through the prism of language
conflict are determined.
