Abstract

An inadequate biowaste management increases the amount of mixed waste, landfill load, and greenhouse-gas emissions. This paper analyzes the effectiveness of a separate biowaste-collection system in Daruvar, which decreases the amount of waste in landfills and increases the use of biowaste for composting, thus reducing a need for mineral fertilizers. The citizens separate biowaste while using the wastebins and biodegradable bags, and the collected waste is transported to the compost plant in Popovača, where the process of aerobic fermentation takes place. The system reduced the mixed waste by 42.57%, whereas the collected biowaste increased by 1800%. Composting thus reduces the environmental burden and provides the resources for agriculture.
