Abstract
This paper deals with the comparison of two travelogues with the aim of understanding the perception of early USSR through the eyes of its contemporaries. By comparing Miroslav Krleža’s collection of essays Izlet u Rusiju and Ante Ciliga’s U zemlji velike laži the authors analyze the conditions of early Soviet Union during Stalin’s early days in power. These nonfiction works are looked at having in mind the specific genre of travelogues in European literary tradition at the time and understanding how authors communicate with each other through their work, thus creating an impact on its readers and other creators. Although both Krleža and Ciliga had common ideological ground, their life paths diverged which resulted in different views on life conditions in Russia at the time. By comparing the similarities and differences of these travelogues, this paper aims to achieve a plausible and realistic view of the Russian state and society at the time when it was undergoing huge changes. By analyzing several fields of comparison – writing style, modernization, bureaucracy, society and the repression system an image of complexity and continuity within the new Russian state arises.
