Abstract
Transitional cell carcinoma of the ureter and renal canal system is a rare but aggressive malignancy, often associated with lymphatic spread. Therefore, the assessment of lymph node status plays a crucial role in diagnosis and oncological treatment planning.Although there is no clear international consensus on the extent of lymphadenectomy, increasing evidence points to its importance in patients with high-risk tumours (high grade, stage ≥ pT3, enlarged lymph nodes). The aim of this paper was to analyse the role, indications, and benefits of lymphadenectomy. It is shown that adequately and timely performed lymphadenectomy allows for more precise disease staging, removal of micrometastases invisible to imaging methods, and facilitates decision-making regarding adjuvant therapy.
