Abstract

The Black Redstart Phoenicurus ochruros is an insectivorous passerine that breeds
across Europe, Asia, and Africa. While traditionally associated with mountainous habitats,
it now commonly nests in both rural and urban environments. The first known cases
of Black Redstarts nesting in “wagtail” type nestboxes placed under bridges were reported.
One nesting pair was observed in 2024, followed by two pairs in 2025, in the Hrvatsko
Zagorje region of Croatia. This unusual nesting behaviour is likely a result of the species’
local population growth and subsequent expansion into alternative breeding habitats.
