Abstract

The paper examines whether there is justification for associating the story of Medea with Medveja in literature, and whether that story can be used for an efferent reading of the landscape for tourism, educational, and personal purposes. The paper focuses on the field of cultural geography, specifically related to “reading landscapes.” With regard to literature, the connection between the story of Medea and Medveja has been identified in newspaper articles on various topics, as well as in professional books and literary works in both Croatian and Italian. It is also noteworthy that the story of Medea also appears in Lovran tourist publications that feature Medveja. The paper confirms a long-standing tradition of associating Medea and Medveja in literature spanning over several decades, accepted over time in both Italian and Croatian traditions. The paper also offers a methodological elaboration of the reading landscapes for tourism purposes. This approach is further extended to the field of education and it explores possibility of achieving inner satisfaction that an individual may experience when reading landscapes through the story of Medea. Furthermore, texts by Tatjana Jedriško Pančelat are considered in the analysis of certain motifs.
