Abstract

Academician Stjepan Šćavničar contributed enormously to the growth of mineralogy
and crystallography in Croatia in the second half of the 20th century as an outstanding
scientist and university professor. He studied mineralogy-chemistry at the Faculty of
Science in Zagreb. After graduating in 1951, he was initially an assistant in the Faculty’s Division of Mineralogy and Petrology and worked there in an ascending position until
his retirement. Šćavničar devoted his whole life to science and teaching. A remarkable
personality and well-known scientist, he was a member of many prestigious Croatian
and international professional and scientific organisations. In 1990, he was elected a
fellow of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
