Abstract

The paper reconstructs the institutional and pastoral history of the parish of Villanova
di Grisignana/Nova Vas kod Grožnjana between the sixteenth and eighteenth
centuries through a systematic analysis of the chronotaxis of parish priests and activities
of the bishops of the Diocese of Cittanova/Novigrad. Starting from the settlement
of habitanti novi and the establishment of the parish of Our Lady of the Angels,
the paper explores the often-conflicting relations between the local community, the
church and the civil authorities, with particular emphasis on the controversies on
ius eligendi and ius patronatus. The extensive use of archival sources – pastoral
visits, trials, parish chapters and synodal acts – allows for creating an outline of
a complex picture of rural religious life, pious practices and forms of disciplinary
control in the post-Tridentine era. The paper highlights the role of pastoral visits and
diocesan synods in the process of accepting the Tridentine reforms, while also emphasizing
local resistance, the inadequate training of the clergy and the persistence
of negotiated pastoral models. This results in a microhistory of the parish that sheds
light on the broader dynamics of Istrian society during the ancien régime.
