Abstract

One of the most pressing concerns about Internet use today is the possible
endangerment of a person’s privacy. Technology allows for simple data acquisition
about users via cookies and online site registration. Cookies are used without the
consent of the user, and if a user wants to block cookies, oftentimes sites will not
allow the user access to information. Online-only media use cookies much more than
the online sites of classic media. Mandatory registration of demographic and contact
information gives online users access to newsletters, forums and comment areas.
Online media do not use encryption throughout a user’s registration. In
order to reduce privacy concerns, online media should publish statements on their
sites, explaining users’ personal information is protected; unfortunately, it has been
established very few online media, which use cookies and registration, use privacy
statements.
