Abstract
This paper aims to examine the influence of the mass media in creating the public image of teachers as professionals. The image of the teaching profession is not very positive and the reasons for this range from low salaries to a lack of status. To be able to make a positive change in their profession, teachers should be aware of the influences that define and shape the public image of their profession. Using content analysis, 389 articles mentioning teachers in 3 daily newspapers in 2006 were examined. The authors found that articles in a negative context significantly outnumbered articles in a positive context. Differences were also observed among the three daily newspapers in the number of articles, their content, and the manner of presenting teachers in the news.
