Abstract

This paper is part of broader research which I conducted with the
objective of analysing the theme Spontaneous Singing on the Island of Murter - Continuity and Changes. During the period between 1975
and 1989, I observed and took part in various occasions of performance of music, so as to get to know the musical world of the island of Murter through varied repertoire. The research was directed to situations of spontaneous music practice i.e. direct musical
communication within small groups of people, and commenced from
the assumption that such situations provide the fullest opportunities for perceiving the dynamic musical world of the people, their interests, musical experiences and needs. The repertoire performed at the free choice of the singers demonstrates both their relation towards the musical tradition of their own environment, and towards music adopted from other folklore regions and also from the field of popular music.
