Abstract

The only empirically validated interventions for teaching persons with autism spectrum disorders are those based on applied behavior analysis. Behavioral interventions are still widely confused with behavior modification and the most structured behavior intervention – discrete trial instruction. Contemporary applied behavior analysis includes adjusting settings, language, interaction styles and materials, and also teaching strategies and problem behavior interventions. Teaching strategies include structured behavior interventions and naturalistic behavior interventions. Problem behavior interventions include setting event strategies, predictor strategies, teaching and consequence strategies. Evidence based teaching strategies based on the principles of applied behavior analysis and behavior intervention terminology will be presented in this article.
