Abstract

Th is paper researches interactive connections of the society, economy and knowledge
that is recently appearing through the knowledge society and knowledge based economy
syntagme. Interdependence of the society, economy and knowledge sometimes is comprehended
virtually in the real life. Answers that are off ered in this paper point out the fact
that the knowledge society is not a myth but a phenomenon that is becoming conditio sine
qua non of the stable social and economic development. Methods used in this paper correspond
to the need of defi ning a knowledge society phenomenon, measure of the knowledge
society performance, and comparative indicators of the achievement on the four knowledge
economy pillars in Croatia and selected group of countries. Th e Knowledge Assessment
Methodology, created by Th e World Bank, represents a solid base for the standardization
of the relevant indicators that are incorporated in the four knowledge economy pillars.
Th e challenges that are placed in front of Croatia correspond equally to the domain of
the education, information and communication infrastructure, innovation system and the
economic and institutional regime.
