Abstract

New social, economic and political circumstances at the turn of the 21st century demand a rethinking of cities. Decreasing population figures in the cities of developed countries, offer a possibility of getting more time and space for thinking about new investments and spatial designs to improve citizens’ lives. The paper presents a comparison of several researched models of urban development for the near future, each having its own specific approach. Their analysis and comparison are the contribution to a theoretical rethinking of cities in the early 21st century.
