Sažetak
The translation of a specific text, as is the case with a literary piece of writing containing segments written in a language of a specialist subject field, can be successful only if the translator adopts an appropriate approach. In other words, the translator has to understand that in such cases there are specific demands determined by an expansion of the semantic space, which has to be interpreted adequately and accurately. If the translator manages to comprehend the source text from various perspectives, different languages that occur and create its structure will remain in the correlation created by its author. Accordingly, attention is paid to some elements that may make it easier for a translator to get along with the translation of a source text within the framework explained. The article tries to emphasise that the retention of the original’s specificity is possible only with a high-level expertise that is determined by the constitutive elements of the source text. Furthermore, the translator should aim at creating wider and more open relationships and communication with those who can help them to preserve the spirit of the authentic expression of the original in their target text.
In order to facilitate the comprehension of what has been described and to illustrate several claims, the article refers to the novel Doctor Faustus by Thomas Mann, in which the presence and the interaction of literary and specialized texts are clearly conveyed. Beyond that, for the purpose of the article we carried out an analysis of examples connected with musicological passages in the Croatian translation of the novel.
