Expanding the Lexicon via Analogy and Schema: A Constructionist Approach to Analyzing Proper Names with Suffixes as Novel Lexemes in English
Tijana Šuković
Sažetak
As a more recent approach to word formation, Construction Morphology has put forward the idea of the hierarchical lexicon, which assumes both analogical word formation, based on individual model words, and word formation based on abstract patterns i.e. schemas. In addition, repeated analogical extensions may result in a completely new word formation pattern called a second-order schema. This point of view sharply contrasts the traditional generative practice of excluding non-regular and non-productive cases in word formation studies and considering them as creative analogical formations.
In this paper, we look into proper names with suffixes as novel lexemes (e.g. New Yorkness, Obamahood and Stalinoid) collected from COCA (the Corpus of Contemporary American English), and we analyze their form and meaning by taking into account three possible ways of expanding the lexicon of English in the framework of Construction Morphology: via schema, analogy and second-order schema. The analysis of the formations with proper names and the suffix -ness supports the fact that novel lexemes may be created schematically following an abstract pattern and not one precise model word. However, some formations with proper names and the suffix -ness may as well be analogical formations with pragmatic reference to a particular model. Pragmatic reference in analogy is also identified with the formations with proper names and the suffix -hood. Last but not least, the formations with proper names and the suffix -oid may be the outputs of a productive second-order schema due to their connection with Greek borrowings as possible models. The research results suggest that all three mechanisms (schema, analogy and second-order schema) ensure the formation of structurally and semantically acceptable novel lexemes based on proper names in English. These lexemes are successfully interpreted thanks to our extra-linguistic knowledge related to either proper names as their formal bases or the model words.
