About language counselling before language reference books

Sažetak
Croatian language counselling has its own centuries-old tradition and, as it has been
stated in the literature, it can be traced back to the beginning of literacy onwards to the
middle of the 18th century (this overview focuses specifically on the period from Marulić’s
Judita to the end of the 19th century), especially if it is considered in the context of linguistic
purism, which is understood as a synonym to the language counselling. The linguistic purism
of that era is discussed by Marko Samardžija (2004), and Ilija Protuđer (2010) elaborated the
prescriptive concerns of Croatian writers and linguists. Moreover, in order to get a clearer picture of the studied period, it is necessary to bring it into the context of the history of the
Croatian language; therefore, an overview of the most relevant events, persons, and works
that characterised linguistic purism / language counselling is presented from Judita (completed
in 1501, printed in 1521) to the end of the 19th century.
