Sažetak

The subject of this paper is the analysis of Franjo Tudjman’s speech in the Croatian Parliament on May 30th 1990 and the Statehood Day of the Republic of Croatia on May 30th. The aim is to explore the relationship between historiography and nationalism, the theory of nation and nationalism, and the myths and narratives associated with these two events. Based on relevant literature and sources, the purpose of the paper is to explain which elements of Smith’s theory of ethnosymbolism, Anderson’s „imagined communities“ and Hobsbawm’s „invented tradition“ can be read from these two events. The aim of Tudjman’s speech in the Parliament and the celebration of May 30th throughout Croatia, Franjo Tudjman’s role in it, and the elements which contributed to the creation of the narrative that „modern Croatian statehood“ began from then on will be explored in this paper.
