Agriculture in ancient Greece

Abstract

Agriculture is one of the founding disciplines of the development of human civilizations. This paper gives an overview of agriculture in ancient Greece, one of the most developed civilizations of antiquity. The historical development of land- and plant (grain, fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers) cultivation is given, along with the descriptions of the Greek collonial expansion and its role in the spreading of plant cultures. A brief overview of the agricultural conditions in
Pharos and Issa is given. The paper also describes how war circumstances could influence the agricultural production. Through the analysis of scientific bibliography and literary and historical sources, the paper illustrates the agrarian trade in the context of ancient Greece. Finally, the question of the importance of agriculture and the influence it had on the Greeks is taken into consideration, this importance being evident both in the mythology and the economic measures of the period.
