Author Guidelines

Pravni vjesnik is a law journal of the Law Faculty in Osijek that publishes papers primarily from the field of law and social sciences. The Editorial Board only takes into consideration and publishes previously unpublished papers. The Journal does not charge registration fees, nor the review and publishing of an article.

Contributions sent in for publishing correspond to the Author's Declaration and Copyright pursuant to the Law on Copyright and Related Rights (Official Gazette 111/2021). By signing the Author's Declaration, the author guarantees that his/her contribution is his/her own original manuscript, that it does not violate ethical rights or copyrights, and that it strictly abides by the methodology of research paper citation.

Submission

The papers should be submitted electronically through the Open Journal Systems: http://hrcak.srce.hr/ojs/index.php/pravni-vjesnik/index.

Authors need to anonymize submitted papers by removing their personal information – names, contacts etc. from the document. Information regarding authors and co-authors should be given in the submission process.

The paper must include the title as well as two summaries (100-250 words) stating the aims, research methods and objectives, followed by keywords (6 max).

Writing guidelines

It is preferable that the works contain up to 32 standard pages (57,600 characters, including white spaces and footnotes). The editorial board reserves the right to adapt the work to the general rules of journal editing and the linguistic regularities of the Croatian standard language.

The main text and footnotes should be written in the same font (Times New Roman), with the main text in size 12 and footnotes in 10. The headings and subheadings should be written in uppercase, with Arabic numeration (eg. 1., 1.2. etc.).

The following format of “double quotation marks”, and 'single quotes' should be used. Giving emphasis should be avoided (italic, bold, underlined, lowercase capitals), particularly in combination with double quotation marks (i.e. never “double quotation marks”). Latin terms and abbreviations should always be written in italic lowercase (op.cit., ibid.). Numbers denoting footnotes are never italicised (²), and if they are located at the end of the sentence, they are placed after the period (.²).

Citation Style

Pravni vjesnik uses the Oxford Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities (OSCOLA). Please refer to OSCOLA for detailed information on citation style:

Additional citation guidelines

If you use the European Human Rights Reports (EHRR) to cite judgments of the European Court of Human Rights, and you are not sure how to do it correctly, we recommend using a format with the application number, e.g. Balogh v Hungary App no 47940/99 (ECtHR, 20 July 2004).

Use abbreviations to cite laws and similar documents published in the Official Gazettes, and finally add the country code at the end of the citation (in brackets) according to the ISO 3166 standard (see the examples below).

If you have multiple references by the same author, state the last name and initials for all of them, do not change them with a double em dash (– –).

Use full journal titles, do not use abbreviations.

The author must organize all used sources in the following categories:

  • BIBLIOGRAPHY: this category includes all sources that do not belong to the categories below, regardless of the medium on which they are located (scientific and professional articles, books, e-books, dissertations, proceedings, etc.);
  • REGULATIONS AND DOCUMENTS: this category comprises constitutions, regulations, conventions, decrees, directives, statutes, codes of ethics, declarations, resolutions and other documents;
  • JUDGMENTS AND OTHER DECISIONS: court judgments, arbitral awards, decisions, rulings, opinions and similar sources are listed here;
  • INTERNET SOURCES: this category includes articles or other content deriving from online newspapers, portals, and various websites. Articles from online scientific journals are listed under the category „bibliography”.

Papers to be published in the Croatian language

In references in the Croatian language, we translate English terms that are commonly used in the citation style (and, and others, in, 2nd edn), and we use Croatian terms (i, i drugi, u, drugo izdanje).

The only exception to the previous guideline is the abbreviation for the editor(s) ed. or eds., which is not translated into Croatian.

The titles of all international legal documents, judgments, etc. should be in English.
