Abstract

In this essay the authors have outlined their pastoral–catechetical reflections on the baptismal sponsor's ministry. They commence with a discussion on the etymological significance of the word »kum« (sponsor) and the anthropological–theological feagures of the sponsor's ministry. The topic is treated within the context of the sacrament's significance and the position that it occupies in the life of the faithful. Also, the article presents a speech made at the Second Vatican Council in which the baptismal sponsor's ministry was explicated, and which has been implemented in the revised Rite of Baptism and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and in the Code of Canon Law. The authors have also taken a look at the way in which the sponsor's ministry is exercised today and have endeavoured to encourage the faithful to develop an awareness of this important and responsible ministry in the Church.
