Effect of sowing density on the quality and yield of a mixture of winter pea and rye

Sažetak

The objective of three-year research (1994/95 to 1997/98) was to determine the effect of sowing density on the characteristics, yields and quality of the mixture of winter pea Maksimirski and fodder rye. Winter pea was sown at a sowing rate of 50, 100 and 150 seeds per 1 m2 and rye at a rate of 100 and 200 seeds per 1 m2. Average green mass yields of the mixture from 50 to 56.6 t/ha were determined by cutting at the beginning of flowering. Differences in yields were not significant. At the time of cutting, the average dry matter content of the mixtures was 22.00%. When cut, rye had an average of 26.58% and pea 17.00% of dry matter in the green mass. Average proportion of pea in the green mass amounted to 23.8% at cutting, while in dry matter varied from 11.38 to 23.56% (17.51% on the average) per sowing density. Dry matter yields of the mixture were dependent on the sowing density and ranged between 11.88 t/ha to 13.49 t/ha, wit no significant differences. In the third research year, the mixture was cut three times - before rye ear formation (28/04), at the beginning of pea flowering (07/05), and in the stage of full pea flowering(14/ 05). Depending on the cutting date, the yields of green mass amounted to, 51.801/ ha (28/04), 58.59 t/ha (07/05.) and 63.52 t/ha (14/05) while the yields of dry matter were 11.24 t/ha (28/04), 14.07t/ha (07/05.) and 18.50 t/ha (14/05). The average yields of digestable crude proteins were 1491 kg/ha, 1434 kg/ha, and 1821 kg/ha on (28/04); (7/05), and (14/05) respectively. The yields of starch units were, on the average, of 7.79 t/ha, 8.54 t/ha, and 12.54 t/ha for the some cutting dates.
