APPLYING MATHEMATICAL METHODS IN THE METHODOLOGY OF SOLVING NUMERICAL PHYSICS PROBLEMS

Sažetak

To solve a given problem in natural sciences most frequently means achieve a target in the form of a result, often displayed in a numerical form, and starting from some given parameters. When the set problem concerns Physics it is about determining the values of one or more variables based on the basis of values given a priori or easily recognizable from the very problem. The described method of solving problems in natural sciences dates from Galilei's times, who first introduced the experiment in the methodology of scientific research in physics. However, with virtual problems, as in the case of the described kinematics task, it happens that the student believes the problem to be insolvable for lacking initial parameters. In such cases the so called mathematical models are applied. The described mathematical model is very simple, but it can be delusive if the task is tried to be solved mnemotechnically.
The mnemotechnical method is popular among pupils and students with poor learning basis, and consists of trials to mechanically, i.e. mnemotechnically find a designed formula that could, approximately, match the problem. Scientifically, the more serious mathematical models which, at first sight, seem to have nothing in common with the given problem (in the described example we come upon the phenomenon of oscillation and swinging that has nothing to do with the train), in fact produce a good result.
Complex mathematical models and mathematical simulations that can be solved only by fast computers are used in the physics of climate, synoptic meteorology, for long-term weather forecasts.
