Abstract
Language teaching is a complex profession based on the recognition of research approach. Since the second half of the twentieth century, a number of scientifi c disciplines and theories have infl uenced language teaching and learning. The fi rst part of this paper presents a brief overview of the theoretical and practical principles involved in the structural-behaviouristic, traditional communicative and contemporary KUKS (Croatian acronym for Communicative-Learning/Acquisition-Contrastive-Cognitive) approaches. The second part deals with the analysis of theoretical models involved in language teaching materials and provides practical examples to demonstrate how the same coursebook unit can be presented by using two diff erent teaching approaches – structuralbehaviouristic and KUKS approach. This paper aims at raising teachers’ awareness of the underlying theoretical concepts integrated in the teaching process on one hand and teaching materials on the other as well as of the necessity to develop a flexible, eclectic approach to teaching
