Sažetak

In Slovenia some primary schools, which met certain criteria, introduced nine-year primary education in school year 1999/2000. The nine-year primary education spread to the rest of schools in 2003/2004 and all six-year old pupils. Nine-year primary school requires changes of space, personnel and content. When planning teaching contents one must start from the child. We should be guided by the following principles: from closer to far away, from concrete to abstract and from known to unknown. The supporters of the child centred work methodology advocate teaching, especially in the first class of the nine-year primary school, at activity centres. The centre of attention should be the notion that whole life is interlinked. It is their opinion that the change is necessary if we take into account the flow of information in everyday life, the change of the role of traditional institutions and new discoveries regarding brain functioning. Teachers should guide pupils in their decision making and taking responsibility for their decisions. Pupils should be encouraged to shape and to express their own opinions.
