Sažetak

In the past years, the Republic of Slovenia has made a tremendous improvement on its path towards EU and NATO membership. Considering the fact that NATO plays a leading role in European security and that it expands its activities assuming new roles and establishing new missions and partnerships, it is only understandable that Slovenia strived after becoming NATO member already at the Prague Summit in 2002. However, it was not an easy task to achieve. Slovenia as much as other candidates
for NATO membership had to fulfil three basic preconditions: to carry out a thorough reorganization and adjustment of its armed forces to the NATO standards, which are rather strict; to create stabile democratic conditions in the country and to solve all the on-going disputes with its neighbours. The country's geostrategic position and its geopolitical advantageousness also affected the admission of Slovenia into the Alliance. At this point, NATO perceives Slovenia as a member that can contribute in political and economic stabilization of the region of Southeastern Europe. The analysis of establishment of national security system of Slovenia and its admission into NATO demonstrates an interesting experience of a country that in a short time, after the war, managed to commence and to finish the process of transition.
