Consociational interpretations of the European Union: A critial review

Abstract

This article critically presents and examines consociational interpretations
of the European Union. The first part of article explains obstacles and basic
principles in applying consociationalism to the European Union. The
second part of the article presents analyses of political institutions and political
dynamics of the European Union based on Arend Lijpharts’s model
of consociational democracy. The third part of article presents research insights
on the type of consociation in the European Union, while the fourth
part reviews explanations of genesis of consociational arrangements in the
European Union. Concluding part discusses methodological problem and
heuristic contribution of consociational interpretations of the European
Union.
