Abstract

This paper presents the preliminary results of a study that aimed to gain insight into educators’ general perceptions about teaching for critical thinking. This study is part of a larger research project that deals with providing support to educators in teaching for critical thinking. The focus of this paper is to examine the benefits and challenges of applying teaching for critical thinking in educational practice and the ways to overcome the aforementioned challenges, as well as improve teaching for critical thinking in educational practice. A thematic analysis of the qualitative data obtained from the responses of 209 educators to the open-ended questions in the Questionnaire on Teaching for Critical Thinking has been conducted. The research findings suggest that teaching for critical thinking has many benefits, especially for students as key stakeholders in education. Although the research results point to numerous challenges in the application of teaching for critical thinking, it is important to emphasize that the ways to overcome these challenges and improve teaching for critical thinking have also been identified.
