Multilingualism in Russian Translations of Marin Držić’s Comedy Dundo Maroje

Sažetak

Marin Držić’s most famous comedy, Dundo Maroje, is also one of the most performed Slavic Renaissance comedies on world stages. In this essay, the focus is on the analysis of two of its Russian translations – L. Solntseva’s from 1955 and N. Vagapova’s from 1980, both made specifically for the purpose of staging the comedy in Soviet theatres. Specifically, we were interested in one of the most complex aspects of the comedy – the linguistic one. The complexity of Držić’s linguistic picture reflects new trends in Renaissance comedy, but also Držić’s unique way of conveying Dubrovnik realities. It should be noted that both translations were based on a shortened and simplified adaptation of the comedy by Marko Fotez, created in 1938 with the aim of revitalizing its stage performance. Given the original much more complex tangle of Dubrovnik urban idiom; Croatian, Italian, and German languages; and their distorted variants, a very complex translation task remained, which, as has been demonstrated, Russian translators solved in accordance with prevailing trends in translating this Držić’s masterpiece.
