Sažetak

Extensive building activity was taking place in Vienna in the second half of
the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The continuous extension of
railway lines made the transport of materials from across the former Austro-
Hungarian Monarchy possible. Compact limestones from the Adriatic coast
were frequently used building-materials and can be found in many Viennese
monuments from this period.
The work of the Austrian geologist Alois Kieslinger (1900–1975) is the most
important source of information regarding mineral materials in cultural assets
in Austria. This article focuses on the representation of karst limestones in
Kieslinger’s written sources, his stone collection, and traces back their use in
Viennese monuments.
