Abstract

On the farthest northeastern edge of the Croatian ethnic territory, in the county of Bačka live Bunjevci and Šokci, whom writers also call by a common name Bački Hrvati or Podunavski Hrvati (Danubian Croats). The author is discussing the characteristics of their social and political life in the period from the Austria-Hungarian agreement in 1867 to the fall of the Habsburg Monarchy in 1918.
In that area the Croatian population were mainly farmers, while the middle class was not developed at that time. In the advanced political life in Hungaria the Croatian population joined various Magyar parties. However, in the seventies began the national revival, a systematic work on arousing the national consciousness. In struggle for the language and schools gradually developed the thought of the own political party which was called »Bunjevačko-šokačka stranka«. In the revival work the most prominent were I. Antunovič, A. Šarčević, В. Modrošić, K. Milodanović, and others, while L. Mamužić, Š. Mukić, Stj. Vojnić, the brothers Sudarević and others greatly contributed to the political-party life of that time. The party was still working during the first years in the new South-Slav state community after 1918, with the desire to gather the Croatian population in Bačka. Although the party life had many faults, the achievements of the revival were great.
