ON THE STAGES OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF CROATIAN SOCIETY AND OF THE PERIODIZATION OF CROATIAN HISTORY TILL THE 13TH CENTURY
Ivo Goldstein
Sažetak
Historians have very rarely discussed the problem of the periodization of medieval Croatian history. It has been generally considered that the Croatian middle ages begin with the migration of the Croats to the ancient province of Dalmatia after 600AD. This early medieval period finished, according to this opinion, in the year 1102, when the Croatian throne was given to the Hungarian dynasty of Arpad.
The author claims that this traditional periodization should be replaced by a new one, based mainly on social and economic characteristics. He thinks that these periods are:
1. An early period, beginning with the reforms of Diocletian and Constantine, and continuing with specific late-antique changes in Dalmatia and Pannonia. Croatian settlement in this area did not bring about and radical changes.
2. The early middle ages begin approximately around 800AD. Croatian society develops under external pressure from, and with the help of, the Byzantine and Frankish empires and becomes, in the course of the centuries, a typical medieval society.
3. After the reign of Tomislav (before 910—after 928) the period of crisis begins. Internal strife and external invasions are only manifestations of the impotence and collapse of this poor, undeveloped society and its inability to invest large sums of money over a longer period (in an army, castles, churches, ecclesiastical hierarchy, etc.).
4. A new period of development starts in the 11th century with the reigns of Petar Krešimir IV and Dimitrije Zvonimir. To sum up, the author suggests that the Croatian early middle ages should be considered as starting around the year 800, and finishing in the second half of the 11th c.
