MEĐIMURJE COUNTY MUSEUM IN ČAKOVEC – AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE TOURISM EXPERIENCE IN THE CITY OF ČAKOVEC AND MEĐIMURJE COUNTY

Abstract
Museum activities play a crucial role in tourism and various other economic areas. A good example of successful museum promotion is Museum Night, a well-known, popular, and free one-day activity organized by the Croatian Museum Association since 2005. The Museum Night in Čakovec is held in collaboration with the municipalities of Međimurje County, which consists of 22 municipalities, as well as the cities of Prelog and Mursko Središće, in addition to Čakovec. The event aims to highlight the significance of museums and, through permanent exhibitions, workshops, and educational programs,
bring local history closer to both residents and visitors from other regions. The goal of this paper is to determine when the
event first began, its themes, attendance figures, and the share of its visitors in relation to the total number of museum visitors in Croatia over the past ten years. Event programs from 2008 onward are examined and analyzed, since that was the year Museum Night was first held at the Međimurje County Museum in Čakovec. Since 2015, the museum’s programs have been aligned with national-level programs, whereas previously, each museum had its own programs and activities.”. The Međimurje County Museum in Čakovec joined Museum Night in 2008, and since then, the event has only not been held once, in 2013. However, it resumed the following year and has continued uninterrupted ever since. Analyzing all collected data, we found that event attendance has been very good and, at times, excellent. It is worth noting that during the 2021 pandemic, the event was held online, and the number of virtual visitors was exceptionally high – 4,900 in total. New technologies, along with responsible and sustainable business practices contribute to the development of tourism in Međimurje County, as evidenced by the awards received by both Međimurje’s tourism and the Međimurje County Museum in Čakovec.
